PLOT/ NARRATIVE STRUCTURE This is a book which could be described as haunting though it consists of a worthy storyline. Joseph is a 14 year old boy who is neglected by his father but has his mother no matter what.

Joseph has always had an interest in the neighbour’s house and who lived inside it but stayed away as far as possible. There is also a man who Joseph calls the “running man” who appears in Joseph’s nightmare but does not really contribute to the story.

The running man is also a significant symbol alongside the silk worms. When Joseph has a portrait to paint, he meets Tom Leyton and there begin a unbreakable friendship despite their great age difference. Through all this, the silkworms are also a symbol of their friendship and how they got to going about being friends. Each visit to Tom’s house is a revelation of Tom’s life during his Vietnam veteran days and the reason why he is closed up in his room unable to accept his identity. The plot structure is chronological though it may confuse the readers at the beginning but it is sensible and thought through. The start of the book begins with a glimpse of the tragic ending but then backtracks and it discusses everything that happened before the funeral. CHARACTERS Throughout the novel, there are two very distinct characters who in the beginning kept as far as possible, though they only lived across the street. Gradually, the two characters begin to interact and develop a friendship that they would have never been possible to accomplish. The two main characters are:Joseph Davidson: Joseph Davidson is a youthful fourteen year old boy who has an amazing talent for art.

Download Gratis Video Belajar Huruf Hijaiyah U. Joseph is quite a shy, quiet, insecure and solitary only child of the family. His father through majority of the book is not mentioned due to him being at work outside of town to pay for the family requirements. His mother plays a vital role in his life and has been there for him all along. Joseph one day is required to paint a portrait of someone whose face could tell a story. He ponders about who he should paint and had chosen on a neighbour.

Her name is Caroline. Joseph had decided on painting her but was then reasoned to paint her brother instead.

This is when Tom Leyton comes into the picture.Tom Leyton: Tom Leyton lives alone, similarly to Joseph, only he has a sister living with him, Caroline for thirty years. Tom is a Vietnam veteran as has been closed up in his room for those past 3 decades.

He has been raising silkworms over the many years and has never stepped out of the house since. Tom stays away from prying eyes in his room as he knew that Mrs Mossop (neighbour) had her eyes and him and if he had taken a step outside her would be telling everyone. She was the messenger of Tom being the subject of gossip.

When Joseph meets Tom, things start out as awkward meetings and cold conversations which later transformed into frequent visits. The more that Joseph had come over to paint Tom, more revelations of Tom’s past would unravel. Why do you think Joseph Davidson behaved the way he/she did?’ Joseph, in the very beginning was very keen to staying away and avoiding Tom Leyton, his neighbour for many years. He was almost intimidated and afraid of Tom and judging from Mrs Mossop gossip, she left unsure impressions on Tom Leyton as well. Mrs Mossop had often talked about Tom but in a conniving and way as if she knew Tome herself when she did not know the facts. Joseph had probably been influenced by the many things Mrs Mossop had said to him and his mother. Though, after Josephs and Toms meeting, the slowly became very close friends as they found a way to communicate with each other.

Tom had a hobby of raising silkworms in boxes and through this. Joseph was able to get to interact with Tom more. This also helped with his painting because he had sketched Tom many times but never seemed to get it right as Tom has stories that were untold which could not yet be expressed in his eyes.

Over the duration of their visits, secrets unravel and stories are told which helped Joseph paint Tom. Joseph got close with Tom as Joseph was missing a fatherly figure in his life. Even though Joseph had a father, he was only present for a few days and left to go back to work. Joseph found Tom as a replacement for his own father and was also intrigued with many stories Tom had about his life. THEMES AUDIENCE&PURPOSE INTERTEXTUAL CONNECTIONS I personally think that the novel was a heartfelt and warming read and it deserves its awards for being in the category of short listed book. The book overall had a beautiful message and it tells of two very dissimilar characters. There is one character that is young and still learning in life whereas the other is older and has experienced many significant events.

Both these characters contrast each other as well as bring the novel together with many stories of Toms past. The book was an enjoyable and engaging story as it begins at a funeral as Joseph is remembering back about all that has happened. I think it had a good story line and its structure was not hard to understand. I did not necessarily relate to the subject matter or characters but I know that many other readers will.I have always gone by not perceiving someone only by their appearance. Though this book has only gotten me to think further as to the true meaning behind not judging people by their appearance and what other people say about them. I think I will keep this in mind and become a better person overall. It amazes me how a book can have such a special meaning. In the novel silkworms are a key symbol of the novel as Tom says they are simple creatures.

He says that 'They are born into the box, they live, and they die.' That is what Tom Leyton is what Tom perceives them and suggests that he is just like a silkworm. He was born, he lives and then he will die. What he is trying to say infer is that he has no purpose on this earth. Though this is a sad depiction of Tom, it demonstrates the beauty of this book.Compared to other similar books, The Running Man is distinctive amongst the rest. I think the use of symbolism plays a vital role in this book as it is often brought up in the storyline and the silk worms are almost foreshadowing what is to happen in the novel towards the characters. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST VS THE RUNNING MANI think that “The Running Man” has many similarities, theme wise.

In Beauty and the Beast, the beast was transformed into a ugly creature who couldn’t bear to even look at himself in the mirror. Due to this, he locked himself away from anyone and society because he was afraid of what people would think of him based solely on his appearance. This is very similar to The Running Man as Tom Leyton also hid away from the public because of what his past has made him become. Also, in Beauty and the Beast, the Beast met a girl – Belle who was able to relate and open up to him and made him come realise that he could not dwell in the past, but he had to move on whether he liked it or not. She was his motivator and had kept the Beast company since he had no one else to converse with. In contrast to The Running Man, Tom was accompanied by Joseph who becomes Tom’s friend, who plays the same role as Belle. Belle and Joseph were able to get through to their person of interests in there different ways.Lastly, in Beauty and the Beast, the rose was an indicator of foreshadowing the Beasts future.

In The Running Man the silkworms were foreshadowing Tom’s future. All in all, both the movie and the book each had their own symbol which symbolises the each other’s fate, though ending differently. In Beauty and the Beast, when the rose withered to its last petal, the Beast had died but had come back to life due to finding true love with Belle. After all, it is a fairy-tale. In the novel however, when the silkworms died, it indicated Toms future and where he was heading.Overall, the movie “Beauty and the Beast” and the novel “The Running Man” were very alike sharing many similarities. EVALUATION There are two significant themes in this novel.

The first theme is the search for identity. Tom Leyton has trouble to find who he really is and can’t seem to accept who he is and what his past has done to shape him into the way he is today. This is shown through a part if the novel where he comes across photos of his past and the portrait that Joseph had painted of him.

When Tom begins to share his stories, he speaks as if he was reliving those moments and had remembered every single detail of the past. This means that Joseph was an eye opener to Tom and that he was the reason why Tom could come to terms with who he is. I think that the author, Michael Gerard Bauer was targeting the teenage audience for 12-15 years of age. The novel is one that talks about the challenges a teenager may face as they are growing up. It demonstrates things that could be interpreted and relatable to many individuals at that age. The novel indicates this at it talks about Joseph and the struggles he faces as a child who does not really have a father present throughout his life as all boys normally do. It also speaks through to the audience through Josephs point of view.

Teenagers around this age would be keen to reading this book as there are many beautiful meanings behind it and how it showcases the art of love.I think the author’s purpose was to signify the phrase, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. In the novel, no one approaches Tom Leyton throughout his life in his house besides his sister. This may has been influenced by what other people have had to say about Tom.

His appearance was also cold and his eyes were full of feelings and stories that he had kept to himself all this time. When Joseph meets Tom, Joseph’s judgement about Tom was clearly incorrect and had misapprehended Tom. This goes to show that you should not judge a person by their facade and what you have heard of them through other people. You won’t know the facts until you know the person personally. You can’t judge a person before you get to know them and what they have been through.

Types of roles [ ] According to film historian and critic, Douglas was capable of playing characters who were 'weak, culpable, morally indolent, compromised, and greedy for illicit sensation without losing that basic probity or potential for ethical character that we require of a hero.' Critic and author Rob Edelman points out similarities in many of Douglas's roles, writing that in some of his leading films, he personified the 'contemporary, Caucasian middle-to-upper-class American male who finds himself the brunt of female anger because of real or imagined sexual slights.'

These themes of male victimization are seen in films such as (1987), with, (1989), with, (1992), with, (1993), and (1994), with. For his characters in films such as these, 'any kind of sexual contact with someone other than his mate and the mother of his children is destined to come at a costly price.' Edelman describes his characters as the 'Everyman who must contend with, and be victimized by, these women and their raging, psychotic sexuality.' Conversely, Douglas also played powerful characters with dominating personalities equally well: as Gordon Gekko, in the Wall Street franchise, he acted the role of a 'greedy yuppie personification of the Me generation,' convinced that 'greed is good;' in Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile, he played an idealistic soldier of fortune; in (1983), he was a court judge fed up with an inadequate legal system, leading him to become involved with a vigilante group; and in (1989), he proved he could also play a -like action hero as a New York City cop. Having become recognized as both a successful producer and actor, he describes himself as 'an actor first and a producer second.' He has explained why he enjoys both functions: I love the fact that on one side, with acting, you can be a child—acting is wonderful for its innocence and the fun...

On the other side, producing is fun for all the adult kinds of things you do. You deal in business, you deal with the creative forces. As an adult who continues to get older, you like the adult risks.

It's flying without a net, taking chances and learning. I was never good in economics or business—had no business background, you know, and I like it.

I think I'm a chameleon. I think it's something that I possibly inherited early on as a child going back and forth between two families.

I know that whether it's right or wrong, I have an ability to sort of fit into a lot of different situations and make people feel relatively comfortable in a wide range without giving up all my moral values. I think that same chameleonlike quality can transfer into films. I think if you can remember the reason you got involved with it in the first place and try to keep that impulsive, instinctive feeling even when you're being beaten down or exhausted or waylaid, you'll be successful.'
