Rated 5 out of 5 by appledude from Great water heater, needs service every 6 months I have used this GL4 for 8 years now, very durable, no leaks. I learned very quickly that our water in San Diego is so hard that the GL4 needs cleaning every 6 months, which the instructions tell you how to do with vinegar and baking soda. The anode rod needs replacing at this time, but it is cheap, and I buy them 3 at a time from the suggested supplier. I suspect a lot of the problems people have reported is due to not cleaning the unit. I installed mine with flexible stainless hoses, making sure they are rated for hot water.

Lightlid 35 Calibrator Download Yahoo more. I installed galvanized pipe closer to the water heater, as the temp seems to break down the rubber inside the stainless hoses in a couple of years if connected directly to the water heater. I bought a used small Rigid wet-dry vac, the type you can carry - to make cleanout easier. After I have cleaned the tank and heating element, I put a bit of vinegar inside the almost clean tank, and flush it with water.

Then after hook it up I run the sink faucet without the aerator attached to flush the last bit of vinegar water and crud from the heater. To me, servicing every 6 months is a small price for the luxury of really nice hot water for my kitchen sink, dishwasher, and front load washer. I can't run my dishwasher and washing machine at the same time (unless running the washer on cold cycle), but who cares? I read some complaints about not enough water for showering - this is a fault of the contractors who put these in for this purpose, this is a 4 gallon water heater, enough for hand washing, and small tasks such as appliances that use some hot water, then give the water heater time to reheat before drawing on it again. It will not do the job of a 20 or 30 gallon water heater, it is only 4 gallons. There are instant water heaters out there, but this is not one of them, nor is it as expensive. I also installed mine on the countertop, and placed it on a rubbermaid dish strainer mat, so when I service the unit, or if it leaks - the water gets directed to the sink.

Makes things so much easier, though it has never leaked. I like the styling of the unit, and love the on/off switch being easily accessible. I turn the unit off when I leave, and on when I come home. During the hot summer months I leave it off until I really need it.

Over the years a bit of insulation may have came out of where a heavy power cord goes into the body of the heater - when I service it, I may have gotten this area bit too wet the last 2 times. I have had to leave the faceplate off a day or so for it to dry, otherwise it kicks the GFI outlet off nearby. I will contact Ariston to see if I need to put something back in to seal this small gap again. Rated 2 out of 5 by vgvg1 from Does not last long unless you have soft water We purchased this point-of-use water heater because it used to take a very long time to get hot water in the kitchen sink. It was a very nice solution and we were very happy with it. However, the tank started to leak after less than 2 years. We called the company and they explained that with hard water (which is pretty much the case in the whole country!), they recommend changing the anode every year to prevent degradation of the tank.

Well that was easier said than done! They sent us a replacement tank since it was under warranty, but process of changing the anode every year is costly and difficult. Anyway, we got rid of the whole thing, but it good while it lasted. Rated 2 out of 5 by TrueTexan from Worked but not reliable Had this unit 3 years and it is installed inline with our big waterheater to provide quicker hot water to kitchen sink and dishwater which it does just fine. Unit developed leak within 6 months and HomeDepot replaced it. Unit thermostate went band at 2 years and replaced. After 2 1/2 years the tank started leaking on the replacement unit.

If you install this make sure you have some kind of water alert system or it may flood under your sink like ours did twice. Also, you have to have copper pipe aoing outside or under house for pressure relief value compliance. Will not buy again due to reliability concerns.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BillNarvaez from Emergency hot water heater My whole house electric on demand hot water heater burnt out. Went to Home Depot to look for a new heater or a hold over.

Found the artisan 4s. I took a chance because I needed hot water immediately. Was a simple hook-up. Used Shark bite and Pex pipe (also great products). I wasn't sure how long the 4 gallons would last taking a shower so I experimented. Regular shower head - water ran until hot -jumped in and got wet - shut off water - shampooed and washed - turned on water to rinse - turned off and used conditioner - turned back on and rinsed - water just started to get cold. Installed a water saver shower head - ran water the entire time I washed and rinsed and still had hot water to spare.

My kids hate it but, it gets them out of the shower faster which means a savings on water and electric. One half hour or more showers are common at my house.

I would like to keep it installed just for that reason. As long as you have a 120 20 amp receptacle, your in business. Rated 5 out of 5 by appledude from great water heater - 1 more comment This water heater is one of the few I have seen that can connect with the HOT water for your building connecting to the COLD inlet side of the water heater - in my condo, hot water has never made it to the kitchen sink for the past 20 years - now I can have the Ariston water heater boost the incoming hot water to an acceptable temperature. Most water heaters can only have cold water hooked up to them, not the incoming hot water for your building.
